Another tradition we have on New Year’s day is “first-footing”.
もう一つのお正月の伝統はファーストフッティングです。
What is first footing?
ファーストフッティングとは

Since ancient times, houses in Scotland have welcomed strangers through their doors with the aim of bringing good fortune for the year ahead.
昔からスコットランドでは、元日に知らない人を家でおもてなしすることでその年の運勢が良くなると信じられています。近年ではは知らない人よりも友達や家族の家に行くことが多いですね。
What gifts do first footers bring?
The first footer will usually come with gifts.
ファーストフターと呼ばれる新年の初客は、贈り物や差し入れを持ってきます。
Traditionally, they would bring a coin, bread, salt, a lump of coal, and whisky – gifts representing all the things the new year would hopefully bring, such as prosperity, food, flavour, warmth and good cheer.
伝統的なギフトは硬貨・パン・塩・石炭の一部そしてウィスキーです。それぞれの贈り物は、一般には新年に手に入れたいものを象徴しています。
